You can see Merlin, my good looking dog in a close up here, but this is my favorite picture of him.
This is Merlin. We were up in the Snowy Range in Wyoming when I took this shot of him running across this field of flowers. He was one happy dog. He died tonight of liver disease. We never could figure out why he had it. I had a time to bring him in tomorrow to be euthanized, but this very good dog went ahead and died in my arms here at home.
Merlin loved his family and friends, that’s for sure. He was definitely a mama’s dog, but he fell ‘in love’ with the daughter of a woman that worked for me. Amy is her name. All you had to do was mention “Amy” and Merlin would be at the window with goofy eyes.
His grandpa Walt was probably his favorite person. When I would leave town Merlin would stay with my mom and stepdad. Grandpa Walt liked to take walks and when Merlin was there, he always had a good excuse to take one envelope to the post office, or deposit a check at the bank, or pick up something at the hardware store. As soon as he put his hat on, or walked upstairs with an envelope Merlin knew they were going for a walk and would do his happy dance.
One time I was sitting on the porch of a local coffee shop with Merlin and some friends with their dogs. All of a sudden Merlin jumped up on the ledge and was just wiggling and wagging. What? What do you see? Well it was a man that had a hat on like the one Grandpa Walt wears. Man was he disappointed.
They always would have salmon on the grill when he was there and chances were good there would be grilled skin for Merlin to eat. Grandma would save him a peanut butter jar to lick. And I am pretty certain that Merlin got more presents at Christmas from these folks than anyone else! They’re going to miss him as much as I will.
Merlin’s Aunt Julie flew all the way from DC to see him before he got too sick. He loved her too, though he was pretty sure she was a bit odd. They liked to hang out by or in my hammock when she’d come to visit. Just a week ago he was playing ball with her.
Actually just 2 days ago he was playing ball with my dad. We had the nicest day, just hanging out at the farm in the sunshine. ‘Grandpa Goon’ came to see Merlin and they played a little ball too. There will be more tears out of that guy before the end of the day.
Let’s see – another story. One of my favorites: The dog across the street named Molly used to jump her fence all the time and then jump mine and hang out. I was never pleasant to her so she wouldn’t be encouraged, but one day I came home from work and Merlin was sitting outside acting like he was in big, big trouble. (he was never in trouble by the way – he was a good, good dog) I went in the house and whew! what a mess!!! Garbage was strewn about, the dog food bag had been ripped open and demolished, there was dirty paw prints on everything including the counter tops. I knew it was Molly, not Merlin. I just always imagined Merlin as one of the kids in the Cat in the Hat when that rascal cat comes to visit and makes such a mess. “No Molly – we don’t do that here!!! Molly – please don’t jump on the counters!! Molly!!!!”
Of course he was not in trouble.
Man he was good dog. When a few of my friends got dogs after I had Merlin, he was always held up as the standard. “How did you get Merlin to not go out the gate when it was open”. I don’t know. He just didn’t want to leave. “How do you get Merlin to stop on a trail when there are people coming vs rushing ahead?” I don’t know. He just did and then would wait for me. “How do you get Merlin to stay out of the horse pastures?”. I don’t know. He just would always wait outside the fence line unless he was invited in.
He knew English. Mom and I counted at least 200 words one time.
Anyway – he’s had a rough couple of years. A large dog attacked him, then he had a ruptured disk in his spine, then bladder stones. He’s been sick now for a couple of weeks with cirrhosis of the liver. ? (as far as I know he only drank water!) We’ve tried numerous things to get him back and the latest (steroids) might have made things worse, but it was a risk. I’ll never know. He died here with me and I’m glad I could be there for him.
Hopefully he’s enjoying a new adventure running in a field of flowers/playing with squeaky toys and swimming in whatever water hole heaven has.
I will miss him dearly.

I sit here with tears in my eyes because I knew and loved this dog, but also because I marvel at how someone who has suffered such a loss could write such a beautiful and poigniant eulogy. What a great relationship you two enjoyed. I am so glad that he passed the way he did, in your arms, just the two of you together, sharing. We should all be loved as much by so many.

My heart just cries with you over loosing your best friend! I’m so sorry but so glad he choose to end his life at his house, with his Mom and while laying in your arms. What a blessed comfort for the both of you. I’m sure he’s going to miss his Mom as much as you’re missing him. Bailey and I prayed for you both last night. I hope your night was peaceful and quiet while Merlin went on to find a new field to run in. Heaven is a greater place to have him. I’m sad.

Thank you both very much.
All dogs go to heaven as we know. It’s funny, the other day one of the barbers in this building came down to commiserate about Merlin’s illness and he described a dream he had had after his Aussie had died. He said his dog was running through a field of yellow flowers and came bounding up to say, ‘don’t worry, I’m ok’.
I showed him the picture that’s posted here and he couldn’t believe it.

Dad is right — you wrote a really beautiful and poignant and special eulogy for Merlin. It just poured right out of your heart.
I know he thought I was a little odd, but I sure loved him. He was the best dog I’ve ever had the pleasure to know and love and spend time with. And I know he was this way in large part because of the life you gave him and the time you spent with him. All dogs should be so lucky.
That is something about the barber’s dream. And this is the BEST photo of Merlin. I am sorry it happened on your birthday, but I am so glad it happened it home, with you.
Heaven is definitely a better place with him there.

We had grilled salmon tonight in honor of Merlin. It seemed strange not having Merlin follow me around while I was fixing it. What a waste to throw a good salmon skin away. I will miss our walks.

Your eulogy was wonderful. How were you able to write it at such a sad time? I will miss Merlin so much. I loved when he stayed here and nudged me in the morning to get out of bed and “get my breakfast” or greet me at the door when I came home from the library. Except on salmon nights when Walt would be grilling and Merlin waited for his skin. I agree with Julie the credit for such a dog like Merlin is you his Mom. He was GREAT and will be sorely missed.

Terri, I’m so sorry. your mom emailed me and let me know. I have never been on a blog in my life! I love the picture of Merlin. Brian says he looks so cute. Brian probably doesn’t remember meeting Merlin but I have vivid images of Aaron and he tossing a ball. The eulogy was very well written (and we all think Julie is a little odd but we love her anyway) and I’d have to agree that the person and the dog shape each other. I can still remember camping with Fiver and what fun we had. You just know how to pick them (or they pick you). It’s sad it happened on your birthday but I’m glad it happened naturally. Our thoughts are with you as you say goodbye. He’s probably in heaven chasing all my cats! Take care, Love Karen and Brian

Terri, I was very saddened to hear of your loss. I am glad the kids & I were able to see Merlin when we were back in Feb. Merlin was a very special dog that will missed by all of us. The kids and I loved him and always looked forward to when he came with you to the folks.

We had the priviledge of knowing Merlin and spending some wonderful times with him and Terri – real memory-making moments. They were a great team. Merlin was definitely the smartest dog we ever knew AND the most fun. That dog knew stuff – and he knew he was in a great home with a wonderful woman – so he was happy and content. We will always remember “Circus Dog!” Terri, we are so sorry for your loss and send our love and a million hugs across the ocean….

Thank you all for your kind words and stories.
It is definitely different around here without him. While I’m not sure that dogs learn to read, even in heaven, I am sure he knew that you all loved him!!

What a well written tribute to a friend that we will all miss. He was one of those dogs that Gerri and I would comment “why can’t our dogs be like you”.
Hopefully Gromit was waiting and maybe they’re running through that field of flowers together.

We are very sorry to hear about Merlin. We know the feeling as Dutchess had her last days in November. Maybe they are meeting each other in heaven.
We’ll never forget when you and Merlin took us hiking over the snow covered trail. Thank goodness Merlin was there to keep an eye out for us. Even though Roger still denies Merlin being there.
I wish Dutchess and Merlin can look down on Duke and help him get trained through this trying puppy phase.
It sure is hard to not have your most understanding friend around anymore.

Your dad told me how to get in on this. Merlin was sure loved by alot of people. I’m sorry I wasn’t around him more to get to know him better, I think I missed out. I hope each day gets better for you, you are in my prayers and I know Merlin is enjoying that field of yellow flowers and feeling no pain

Janet,
When you were at my house last time, I could tell you were kind of fond of the Merlin man. If I could tell that, I am quite certain Merlin knew it. It is sad that you missed out on the time, but definitely we knew you had a little spark going there!
And yes, Kelly and Kathy – I am certain Merlin is up there running around as fast as possible with Grommit and Dutchess!

Merlin was one of the most amazing dogs that I have ever met. I will never forget having him for “Sheep Camp”. He was so personable. His repertoire of tricks, especially Circus Dog was awesome. You are in our thoughts. We loved him so much. I hope he is at the Rainbow Bridge (read on) with Fiver, Gorki, Gromit, and the others!!!
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together….

That is a great picture of Merlin. A blur of happiness. You sure do know how to pick ‘em, he was a great dog. I enjoyed your eulogy, it painted many beautiful pictures in my mind and reminded me how great he was.
